Is it really "safe" to do anything without one anymore?

You do not need one for the bathroom

Isn't the whole point of mega that it's end to end encrypted and no one knows what the file is apart from key holders?

Depends on your local jurisdiction. For example over here in Germany only the uploading part of torrent filesharing is actually illegal, simply downloading stuff without uploading/sharing it with other people (as filehosters like Mega allow you to do) is perfectly legal.

Where did you hear that downloads are legal in Germany? Movie streaming was made legal last year through the European court of law, and later in Germany as well, but I am not aware of a court ruling for downloads

The risk of getting caught through the use of a OCH like mega is close to zero, but it is not legal to download copyrighted material (in most countries) and everyone should be aware of this.

Probably not. I mean of course the fucking british government monitors the entire internet traffic of their population, but I have never heard of a Mega user being sued for simple downloading. Uploading and distributing is a different matter.

Where I am in the US, my download speeds for mega only have dropped to a trickle. It is evidently my ISP selectively restricting download speed from certain sites.

I don't think so. I think mega just has bandwidth problems. I've got fiber at my house and sometimes mega downloads at a crawl, and some times it maxes out my fiber. It seems to vary from day to day quite a bit.

Varies for me between files as well. I downloaded The Martian the other day, which I think was split into five RARs. Four of them downloaded at 7MB/s, and one of them didn't go past 500k/s.

500kb/s is not slow...

For me, some files download very fast and some slow, so I think Mega itself plays some role in slow downloads.

I wouldn't say absolutely not but you really don't. It's one of the main draws of using mega over torrents.

With any of these cyber lockers you are not sharing anything, this is already a huge improvement and also you are not revealing your IP either in not doing so.
