There's a rumor you can install the iWork '09 trial, sign out of the MAS, quit the MAS, relaunch it and the apps appear as upgrades - i.e. they've been adopted.

I figured it out. One needs to make a new admin account, download on that admin account, then sign out of it and delete it. Then it will be available on the original account.
