how does apple not know you've updated illegally?

There isn't any kind of registration info or code associated with it. If you remove the userID string, which is the only thing that says "this copy is mine", then you can share it without anyone knowing where it came from.

I doubt you could get OS updates through the App Store, though. That's where the userID comes into play.

Note: I don't know this for a fact, though after decades of using Macs and a few years of using the Store, I'm pretty sure this is how it works.

What do you mean remove user Id string?

At least when I owned a Mac there were no registration codes so everyone could install the same DVD and be happy.

When you get an app (or in this case an operating system) from the App Store, your App Store account name is added to it. To share the OS the way you and I used to share the DVDs, you need to remove that information. I'm not sure how, but it can't be hard. It's probably in a plist file.

this isn't an app though, its an installation dvd. it wipes the entire operating system.

What about the hash? If every copy had a different userid then the hashes would all differ.

Guys, It's not released yet. It's only in GM and it'll be out in week or too so not worth the download.

gm means gold master aka same version they're releasing to the public.

nope! Golden Master is for near completion, that means no new functions will be added until the release BUT they will fix bugs!

That's simply not true.

If there were any bugs squashed between this time, it'd get updated as a release day App Store update.

The build numbers show a difference between the GM and the released one, which means they made changes to the code. No New features, therefor it's bug fixes.
