Stupid questions | Megalinks MegaDB Stupid questions

How does Mega work? (I never did anything with MegaUpload)

Is there a way to search what other people have uploaded? Is there a way to just browse through uploads? Do you have to get direct links/urls/shared for things?

Can you watch things on the website or do you download them first?

Are there any tricks to finding things that you're looking for?

I know they're stupid questions, but I'm just completely in the dark about how to use it.

Thanks

Please realize this is a BETA before you cast any harsh judgements, all the things they plan on releasing after right now is available in list form here

I'll be honest, I never used MegaUpload for very much either. If something I wanted to download had the option, I definitely preferred MegaUpload, based entirely on speeds and what I thought was semi-legitimate security, considering it was so mainstream.(Yes, that is a generalization and a dumb thing to think, but I never got a virus from MegaUpload). I personally haven't had any upload issues with it yet, but in the beginning I did notice slow upload speeds. To fix this, simply go to My Account >> Transfer Settings, and set Upload Speeds to either "None"(meaning that it'll go its fastest), or "Fixed" and set a specific speed you want it to run at in the box to the right of it.

On sharing, MEGA has an about page that I searched through for your answer:

You can share any subtree of your cloud drive with friends, family or coworkers. Invitation is by e-mail address. Invitees who do not have an account yet will receive an e-mail notification with a signup link. Alternatively, you can create a public link to any of your folders and export the folder-specific crypto key, making it accessible without a MEGA account. It is then your responsibility to securely transmit the folder key to the recipient(s). To establish, modify or delete a share, simply right click on a folder in your file manager and select Sharing. There are three access levels: Read-only, read/write (files can be added, but not deleted), and full (files can be added and deleted). If you added an e-mail address that did not have an account yet, you need to be online at least once after the recipient completes the signup process so that you can encrypt the share secret to his newly created public key.

On getting links to folders...

First of all, a word of caution: The cryptographic security of your files depends on the confidentiality of the associated encryption keys. Make sure that you transmit them via protected channels only! Standard e-mail, for example, is not good enough. With that in mind, select one or multiple files in your file manager, then right-click and use "Get link". A dialog with the public link(s) to the file(s) you have selected will open. You can choose to export each link and key separately or as a single combo link.

For finding what you're looking for? Not yet, sorry. There IS a local search function, for things you personally have, and I think what's been shared to you, but no dice on a site-wide search. I hope they'll add a site-wide search feature to browse through ALL public stuff, but maybe they won't, I don't know.

If people have shared something with you, they'll have to know your e-mail so they can 'share' it with you.(To initiate sharing, just right-click on the folder/file you want to share, a nice little window will pop-up, give you the option of who to allow access to, what they can/can't do, and it also shows a log of who's been given access to it in the past.) Now, to see this from another account, go to Contacts, and simply click on whoever sent it to you. Doing so will reveal the file/folder to you!

No idea on the watching of things, sorry.

Also, this is a wonderful resource for whatever questions you have.

I have a question, though: how do we make folders available to the public as a sharing option? When I right-click, it only allows the file to be sent to an email. Thanks for all of your information and help.

With that option, when you get the prompt to enter in an e-mail, you aren't sending it to somebody, you're adding that person to an "approved" list of sorts to view your document.

Also, I'm not sure you can actually link to an entire folder(Folders so far can only be shared via the "share" option.). So right-click on the file you're looking to show everyone, and select "Get Link". Then post that.

Thanks so much! Helps to know that folders can't necessarily be shared publicly but files can. Much appreciated!

Client applications

  • A Windows filesystem mount is currently in beta and will be available shortly
  • Linux/MacOS X filesystem mounts
  • Mobile access
  • Sync tools for all major platforms

I can use this in place of dropbox + encfs.

You go on special forums and get links for content there, like with any other http sharing service (rapidshare, etc)

So someone will post a link in a random place, you click on it and it brings you back to mega and it starts downloading?

Right, because I'm sure you were born already knowing how Megaupload would work, as well as Mega. Everyone has to learn eventually, so quit being a dick. If anything, I would say that the whole controversy over Mega and filesharing as a whole communicates a very strong theme of openness and information for everyone... yet here you are patronizing someone for seeking knowledge.
