[META] Any reason to still use Megadownloader? | Megalinks MegaDB [META] Any reason to still use Megadownloader?

Why is Megadownloader still in the sidebar?

Now that it can't bypass the limit without you changing your IP manually, wouldn't a download manager with auto-reconnect like JDownloader be better?

Some use Megadownloader with a VPN and just reset it. That's what I typically do. I don't really see an issue with it still being in the sidebar.

Didn't think about VPNs when making this thread, thanks for clearing that up (even though that's something you can do with MegaSync so that makes me even more confused).
I'm not against having it in the sidebar either, as long as it has a use.

Yeah, I think some people still use it. But I understand where you're coming from. It's a bit of a pain now that the 5gb limit can't be bypassed using an app.

I use it for big single file downloads from mega since it doesn't have to decrypt like jdownloader. I use jdownloader for everything else.

Even with JDownloader I need to use manually reconnect my VPN as I have a static address from my ISP.

Not sure why, but I can download on Megadownloader until I hit the bandwidth limit, then exit out and switch over to JDownloader and continue downloading until hitting the limit again.

I'm in the minority here- I never could get jDownloader to work, but Megadownloader works smoothly for me. But I recognize most people prefer jDownloader.

I used to use megadownloader all the time until the 5 gig limit was imposed. Then i switched over to jdownloader so you can resume any broken downloads from hitting the limit, something MD didn't allow. The other thing I didn't like about MD was that you can't pick and choose which file you want to download when there's multiple files on a mega folder/link. All in all, i'm happy with the switch. But with that said, if you have a working method around the 5 gig limit like a vpn (i don't), then really any popular downloader will do fine minus the MD's lack of picking and choosing a file feature that is.

What other options are there that are better?

I mentioned JDownloader 2, it can detect when you hit the limit and automatically restart your router.

yeah I' m already digging into it. But I don't really get it. Why do i need a login for a downloadmanager. That makes no sense to me.

Does anyone who use jdownloader know how to play files while they're downloading? It's the biggest reason I still use megadownloader still

Play the .part file with VLC, it should work (as long as your download speed can keep up)

Jdownloader part files don't play on vlc. It's encrypted somehow.

It might be your chunk setting. JD2 can download different parts of a file instead of continuous bits.

What would you recommend for the chunk setting? Currently I have mine set to 1. I can play a part file when downloading with megadownloader but not with jdownloader.

Right with it set to 1 you are downloading the file in order. For each chuck, you divide the file into N chunks and each part downloads separately. If you hover over the progress bar I can sometimes get it to show the chunks. I think it really depends on your bandwidth, # of connections your router supports, and if the source is throttling connections. I currently am using chunks=3 but don't really noticed much difference.
