Can anyone comment as to whether this is a properly deinterlaced version or if it still looks like an incredibly poor 480p upscale with really bad haloing?
Definitely cleaner looking than the DVD, but it still doesn't look too great, honestly. However, I have yet to see any version that doesn't have those issues and at this point am convinced that much of it is from the source material.

I think you may be right. I have a copy with those issues as well. Better than nothing but I really would love a true 1080p release. Thanks for your response!

That might improve it a bit, yes. Especially the noise/artifacting removal and smoothing out the jagged lines.
There is also this animation issue where the frames appear to fade into each other (can't remember the technical name for that but here's an example). Since the framerate is 25fps, I thought it might be some kind of telecine/pulldown problem, but then I checked a reputable DVD rip and it shows the exact same issue, so I think it just came that way from the master source.
