[META] Steganography? | Megalinks MegaDB [META] Steganography?

Can I suggest trying neat little option MegaDownloader has, called steganography? You basically hide links inside any JPEG image. It is under Options -> Steganography. You can then just post the image and the links would stay completely hidden.

Instructions here: http://imgur.com/a/eSaXP You can specify password and JPEG quality and choose if you want the links to stay hidden for the user downloading.

Now, it does not work if you upload the image with the links on imgur. But you can download it from here to try it out: https://transfer.sh/cUiij/tree-838667-1280-mega.jpg

Password is "password".

I don't know if this will help keeping links alive but it would be interesting to check.

Thing is, some people here struggle with the notion of having to type in the "mega.co.nz" part themselves or adding two numbers in the key, steganography is only gonna bring more headache for the uploaders.

(I think it's a great idea otherwise)

Well, you're going to find idiots everywhere. And if they can't figure it out themselves, I don't think they should get it here anyway.

As someone who uploads things on a regular basis, It'd be just as easy either way. As an optional thing on top of the regular posting links would be the best way about it.

In the long run, when people learn what to do, this could prove simpler way to download as it doesn't require to copy two separate parts of the URL and type in stuff manually. You just download an image. And if you don't have time to download right then you can save it for later.

MegaDownloader only runs on Windows so you'd screw a lot of people that are willing to download your content.

not true, i have mega downloader running on mac.

That would be a problem. Don't really have much experience with Linux or Mac. Can you run MegaDownloader using Wine?

That would be a huge PITA. I use the command line tools for MEGA to automate the retrieval and clearing out of my drive as well as bypass the bandwidth cap.

This probably just inserts the link at the bottom of the file, after all the image data. People used to exchange a lot of different files this way on image boards like 4chan. You can just open the image file in a text editor and scroll to the very bottom, the link will probably be there.

It doesn't. It encodes the text using the least significant bit of some of the pixels.

I download on Android.

this would ruin that for mobile users....

This is going to alienate a lot of non-windows users

i'm already using it... check out my blog at: http://hebdub.blogspot.co.il/ it's an animation blog, primary for Hebrew dubbed 1080p movies. all the file have 2 audio channels (Hebrew +English/original) and Subs. in order to be able to save the links i've hidden them in the poster files (when you post them in the blog u have to make sure that the original is showed and not the scaled version of it), all you need to do in order to get the link is to copy the image address and paste into megadownloader, i even made a youtube tutorial showing how to do it since most of my "audience" are tech challenged parents. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHgQTsHiSfo

you can keep the links invisible and you can stream the file (MKV) once it starts d/ling, i was actually toying with the idea of patching a shell that will automate it (using megadownloader and MPC/VLC) i even have designs if someone is capable of writing this thing.. (i have graphic design background but lacking programming skills). this could the best way to distribute links without exposing them.

it would be great to see this put more and more into use.... but.. what about all the non windows users?

You could even go deeper and hide keys/links in .PNG tEXt chunks...

Btw, imgur doesn't remove those

I just tried it on Imgur, and the link got removed (probably due to optimizations). If you can figure out a way to have Imgur not remove hidden links off of it, that'd be the best. In the meantime, we'll need a different site to try it on.

nope, it definitely works see here http://i.imgur.com/BFqM92b.png

I added the link to the folder in this post

You can take a look at the tEXt chunk with the keyword "test" with this online tool http://exif.regex.info/exif.cgi

I've had an interest in tEXt chunks tampering earlier this year and coded this little tool that you can find on my Github

it should work on any unix system (I don't know about windows)

Well, that's a png. Where as Megadownloader uses .jpg. Seeing as Imgur uses a compressor for it's jpg files and not it's png files, it'd be a bad platform for sharing .jpg's for steganography.

Whereas .png's can store lines in it's tEXt area of the file, .jpg files compress it into it's actual code and then uses some fancy multiplication to get it out.

I'm not saying your way doesn't work, because it does, but in the instance of using MegaDownloader to extract the links from an image, a .png wouldn't work.

ah, sorry for the confusion, I was clearly off-topic

Instead of using MegaDownloader to do that, why don't you use something like Command Module to hide? http://www.wikihow.com/Hide-a-File-in-an-Image-File

I definitely think having this as well as everything isn't a bad idea. I personally use it quite a bit when Megadownloader has a rough time with a file.
