[META] An Alternative to Private Sub | Megalinks MegaDB [META] An Alternative to Private Sub

There will be two subs:

Every link is associated with a random generated key | Megalinks MegaDB Every link is associated with a random generated key

This insures that:

  1. Anyone can submit a link
  2. Anyone can access a link
  3. IF a mass report happens, we can use the bot to limit access:
    • Check link requester's account age/karma
    • Limit daily request count
  4. We can still UPBOAT!

But yeah, this is a lot of work... No matter what happens, thanks for everyone that contributes!

Sounds like an idea, but I'm not even sure the takedown assholes are coming through this sub. Maybe they can now check all mega files automatically, like YouTube? (Although that would be weird considering mega promises to be super duper privacy and stuff).

This is a pretty good idea, but it's so complicated and can still lead to links getting taken down and reported. Should just go private and hope we get in. Or go back to old days and open up IRC channel with botlists.

Anyone can access a link

If anyone can access, anyone can delete. Also mass deletion is still possible, since they can just request everything they want before they let it delete. Most probably they are already doing it like this and then just mailing a huge list to mega for deletion.

Yeah, so the bot have to be programmed to check the user's account age/karma before giving out the link, or limit the daily requests of an account.

And because the bot logs everything, we may cross check the requests of an account and the deleted links, and make a blacklist.

who says people reporting these links can't have legit reddit accounts?

Cross-checking could work though, but could also be difficult. Also people may not want their downloads to be logged and connected with their account.

True, true. And I totally forgot the privacy issue...

one private: With link posts, and only mods/bots can access

Why? this part doesn't need to exists, the links with their key can be stored in a private database, thus removing reddit responsibility out of the equation (we are only sharing random text), come to think of it, even the public sub need not exists, we can do entire transactions through just the bot, user requests access, by PMing the bot, the bot sends back a list of stuff it has, the users PMs back with what it wants, the bot after doing some checks provides the user with the link, this way we don't we even stay low (by not having a dedicated sub), kinda like XDCC in IRC
Also if somebody is serious in doing this, i would love to get involved, i can code some stuff, although i am kinda infrequent over here ( i have some exams coming up), i love this place and i love to help this community

A public sub is for upvoting and reporting, so mods can easily check if a bad or malicious link needs to be removed, and the uploader still gets the credit.

As for the private sub, I just assumed that running a database would be too much work, and keeping everything under reddit would make the bot easier to code, though I don't really know how bots on reddit are made : |

But, if we are going to cross-check users requests and deleted links, a standalone database is required anyway.

Good point.

Can we not hide a few links behind a captcha link to see if its a human or a bot, or can bots solve those too?

If we assume its bots we are up against, stenography (links hidden in pic) is good idea. Like here: https://www.reddit.com/r/megalinks/comments/5gx6iv/tv_theflash2014s03e09720phdtvx264dimension_732mb/

But if its a human team that's scraping and reporting links, whatever we discuss here can be read by them and can be defeated.

My suggestion is a request system.
weekly thread request
People make request -> someone fulfill that request with a megalink in pm to mod and users.
At the end of the week people who fulfilled request get access to the private sub.
